Overview
Shopular is a mobile deal-finding app that runs in the background and alerts consumers to sales and discounts when they are in a store or mall. It aggregates deals from online postings, emailed offers, and retailers’ Facebook pages into a deals database covering a majority of U.S. retailers, including Walmart, Target and Home Depot. The app reports coverage across 40,000 store locations in all 50 U.S. states and has roughly 10,000 ratings on iTunes and Google Play (5-star and 4.8-star respectively); the company’s user base is about 80% female with two primary segments: teenagers and moms aged 25–35. Until the Series A the team prioritized growing customer base and store coverage rather than revenue. With the new funding the company plans to work directly with retailers, running tests on a feature to let brands communicate with shoppers in-store, and is tracking retailer interest in Apple’s iBeacon and demand for an iPad-optimized app. Shopular also plans to increase personalization using its accumulated consumer behavior data and intends to expand its team from four people by hiring at least nine new staff across engineering, product design, marketing and sales.
