Overview
Sidekick Health has built a gamified digital care platform that delivers personalized behavioral lifestyle nudges and digital therapeutics to support patients with chronic conditions (cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis and others), and to augment drug treatments. The company operates as a B2B vendor targeting payers and pharma, with partnerships including Anthem, Bayer and Pfizer. Its platform has helped more than 40,000 patients globally and is available in six languages; its largest markets are Europe and the U.S., and it has offices in the U.S., Germany, Sweden and Iceland. Sidekick says it grew revenue threefold in 2021 and plans to use new funding to expand its U.S. commercial footprint while doubling headcount from about 120 to 240. The firm intends to build a portfolio of more than 40 medical-grade digital therapeutics by 2026 (18 in R&D today) and currently has 14 commercial partnerships. It emphasizes life-science–grade evidence generation and has published feasibility and randomized trials across several indications. Sidekick Health operates a gamified digital care platform that uses a helmet-wearing cartoon helper to deliver digital nudges, medication reminders and remote patient monitoring for clinicians. The platform provides evidence-based, custom digital therapeutics packages across multiple therapeutic areas including diabetes, ulcerative colitis and smoking cessation, and has been adapted for COVID-19 support. It operates a b2b2c model, partnering with pharma and healthcare providers (notably Pfizer and Bayer) to reach patients; the platform currently reaches around 30,000 patients via those customers. The company emphasizes clinical validation and has published a randomized controlled trial in type 2 diabetes showing significant drops in average blood glucose with associated risk reductions. Sidekick plans to expand into heart failure, oncology and metabolic conditions and aims within two years to address over 20 chronic (and some acute) illnesses. The business is prioritizing growth over profitability and is investing the Series A proceeds into product expansion, accelerated market growth in Europe and the US, and expanded medical and science operations. Goodlifeme has developed SidekickHealth, a gamified platform and app that uses behavioral economics and artificial intelligence alongside evidence-based CDC guidelines to predict, manage and prevent chronic and lifestyle-related conditions such as obesity, heart disease, prediabetes and type-2 diabetes. The platform is designed to enhance the effectiveness of lifestyle education and coaching, including programs such as the CDC’s Diabetes Prevention Program. SidekickHealth has been developed and researched in collaboration with experts from institutions including Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The app has recently gained traction in the U.S., Iceland, and Sweden. The company is led by founders Tryggvi “Thor” Thorgeirsson, M.D., M.P.H., and Sæmundur “Sam” Oddsson, M.D. Financially, the company announced a $1.5M funding round in early 2017.
