Overview
SiEnergy Systems commercializes low-temperature thin-film solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology developed at Harvard University and managed by parent company Allied Minds. The company targets mobile and small stationary power markets with SOFCs designed for fast start-up, load-following capability and greater durability at 300–500°C. Its approach uses silicon-based manufacturing and nanometer-scale electrolytes to reduce cost and enable scalability across power requirements. The system is designed to operate in fuel cell mode—creating electricity directly from hydrocarbon fuels—and in a battery-like mode to provide faster response to changes in power demand. SiEnergy aims to deliver practical, affordable, energy-efficient distributed generation that reduces fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The company was awarded $2.65 million from ARPA‑E’s REBELS program to advance development of its technology.
