Sigmoid Pharma is a privately-owned specialty pharmaceutical and drug-delivery company registered in Ireland focused on oral drug delivery. Its lead candidate, CyCol™, is a colon-targeted oral formulation of cyclosporine for ulcerative colitis that completed a Phase II multicentre, placebo-controlled randomized trial enrolling 118 patients in Ireland and the UK. The company plans to further evaluate CyCol™ in pivotal clinical trials and is designing follow-on trials while exploring collaboration opportunities. Sigmoid’s proprietary SmPill™ oral drug delivery technology is intended to enhance solubility, permeability and oral bioavailability, target delivery within the GI tract, and facilitate oral delivery of peptides and vaccines stable at room temperature. SmPill™ is being evaluated across molecule types and BCS classes and is being assessed in EU- and Irish government-funded research consortia. Financially, Sigmoid closed a private financing round of over €3 million (US$4 million) in Q1 2012 and has secured EU FP7 funding to support its programmes.
