Overview
Signal Sciences is an LA-based company that inserts a protection layer or firewall between the internet and traffic to web applications and mobile sites. Its software analyzes attack information combined with behavioral signals to determine malicious activity and surface attacker intent. The company says it protects more than 10,000 applications and handles roughly 1 trillion requests per month for customers including Adobe, Under Armour and WeWork. Signal Sciences has about 150 employees, and headcount has been doubling each year. Management plans to use the new funding to continue hiring and to broaden customer awareness and adoption of its web protection technology. Signal Sciences offers a Web Protection Platform that sits between customers' web apps, APIs, websites and mobile apps and outside traffic to protect against attackers and misuse. The software can be configured to automatically fix problems and notify the appropriate teams for further analysis. The founders, who previously built Etsy’s security program, designed the product to enable security without slowing rapid, continuous delivery common in DevOps and microservices environments. The company launched its product in 2014 and has since grown to 50 employees and over 60 customers, including Yelp, WeWork, Etsy and Grubhub. Signal Sciences is positioning itself as security specifically built for DevOps and microservices rather than a bolt-on solution. Signal Sciences offers an industry-first next-generation web application firewall (NGWAF) designed for agile development and cloud, physical, and containerized deployments. The product combines real-time visibility into attacker behavior with application protection that blocks attacks without breaking production traffic. It is aimed at elevating security into a strategic, cross-team capability so engineers and DevOps can move fast while remaining secure. As it publicly launched, the company disclosed a 2015 Series A of $9.7 million led by Index Ventures and said it was already deployed with customers including Under Armour, Yelp/Eat 24, Chartbeat, Taser, Shutterstock, Duo Security, Prezi and Etsy. Signal Sciences is headquartered in Venice, California, and was founded by a team from Etsy who built the product in response to legacy WAFs failing to support modern development practices. The company also assembled a board of advisors including Alex Stamos, Chad Dickerson, Brad Arkin, Dan Kaminsky, Gene Kim and Ryan McGeehan. Signal Sciences is developing a software-as-a-service platform that provides practical, proven defenses for web applications. The product is informed by real-world experience defending high-traffic organizations. The company is led by CEO Andrew Peterson and is based in Los Angeles. It closed a $2M seed financing to support product development and early deployments. Over the coming months Signal Sciences is partnering with market leaders for private deployments prior to a general release. The company is actively hiring.
