Overview
Silk Labs is developing Sense, an intelligent smart-home hub that learns from residents’ behavior to automate lights, thermostats, music and security alerts. Sense uses on-device machine learning and computer vision (facial recognition), along with Bluetooth LE, voice, gestures and a companion app for interaction. Out of the box it integrates with Philips Hue, LIFX, Nest and Sonos, with additional integrations planned. The company emphasizes privacy by performing all core ML and data processing on the device and only sending encrypted clips to the cloud; decryption keys remain on the device. Silk Labs has a 13-person team based in San Mateo and is led by co-founder and CEO Andreas Gal; co-founders include Chris Jones and Michael Vines. Financially, the company is backed by $2.5 million in funding and is launching Sense via a Kickstarter campaign with early-bird pre-orders at $225 and shipping later this year.
