Simple Feast

230 W Avenue 26, Los Angeles, California, 90031, United States

Overview

Simple Feast is a Danish sustainable food delivery startup that delivers plant-based, organic meal boxes weekly, ready to serve in 15 minutes. Founded in 2015 by Jakob Jønck and Thomas Stilling Ambus, it operates in Denmark, Sweden, and Los Angeles and expanded to the US in 2020 with the CEO relocating. The company is B Corp certified and emphasizes reducing customers' climate footprints by making plant-based eating easy and convenient. Simple Feast has grown 110% year over year in meals delivered and has previously raised over $50 million to date through institutional rounds. It recently raised nearly €2M via a crowdfunding campaign that has welcomed over 600 new investors and is nearly twice its target. The company plans to use the proceeds to grow its product portfolio, expand its geographic footprint (starting with Southern California), and increase its environmental support as it scales. Simple Feast launched its plant-based food product in early 2017 and has developed a fast-food range of on-demand plant-based meals. The company emphasizes sustainability across packaging (FSC-approved cardboard), cooling elements (frozen tap water in drinkable cartons) and the use of all-organic produce. Typical customers are meat-eating families in their 30s and 40s who are well-educated, have middle or high incomes, and seek high quality, transparency and convenience. Competitors include restaurants, meal-kit services and take-away. Simple Feast plans to expand to the U.S. early next year and to strengthen R&D efforts in new food innovation. Financially, the company has raised a $33M Series B and has now secured total funding north of $50M to date. Simple Feast delivers ready-to-eat plant-based food in biodegradable boxes, sending weekly meal boxes with three prepared, 100% organic meals that are ready to serve in about 10 minutes. The product is positioned as a family-focused, climate-friendly alternative to restaurants, meal kits and take-away, targeting parents (particularly women in their 30s) with one or two kids. Boxes are marketed as sustainably produced and aimed at reducing the environmental impact of meat and dairy consumption. The company raised a $12 million Series A led by Balderton Capital with participation from 14W, and existing investors Sweet Capital and ByFounders re-invested. Founders Jakob Jønck (CEO) and Thomas Ambus (CTO) began developing Simple Feast after Under Armour's acquisition of Endomondo and MyFitnessPal in spring 2015 and got serious about the business in 2016. The new funding is intended to expand its weekly meat-free meal-box deliveries.
