SimplyTapp provides host card emulation (HCE) technology for Android developers, enabling software-based NFC proximity payments with no hardware dependencies. Its HCE and NFC payment platform lets developers integrate secure, scalable mobile transaction capabilities into apps. The company says its technology influences multiple industry segments, including banking, retail, transit, mobile ticketing and hospitality. Co-founder Ted Fifelski emphasized that HCE gives developers the tools to create a secure, scalable mobile transaction platform and an outstanding user experience. SimplyTapp announced a $5.9 million investment from Verizon Ventures to help keep and expand its presence in the mobile payments space. Verizon highlighted HCE’s role in credential management and its potential to enable cloud-based credential platforms across diverse applications. SimplyTapp is an Austin, TX-based developer of cloud-based mobile payment technology that builds open platforms enabling developers to leverage mobile devices for tap-payments and other real-world transactions. Its first platform leverages host card emulation (HCE) in conjunction with near field communications (NFC). The company created HCE and deployed it into the CyanogenMod operating system in early 2012 to bypass the network operator’s SIM card and complete a mobile payment at a point-of-sale terminal. Google later launched HCE with Android 4.4 KitKat and uses HCE within Google Wallet on the Nexus 5. SimplyTapp reports over 100 developers using their SDK tools and has partnered and deployed with a global bank. The company raised a Series A funding of undisclosed amount led by Lightspeed Venture Partners with participation from Blue Sky Capital.
