Overview
Singulex develops and commercializes Single Molecule Counting (SMC) technology and markets the Erenna research-use platform alongside a CLIA-certified cardiovascular testing service. Its SMC platform detects low-abundance biomarkers with single-molecule sensitivity and is used in discovery and clinical applications for cardiovascular disease and other chronic conditions. The company operates two businesses—Life Science Research Tools and Cardiovascular Testing Services—and serves pharmaceutical R&D labs, academic institutions, and CROs. Singulex is advancing plans to expand into a global in vitro diagnostics business and is developing a fully automated diagnostic instrument and associated assays. The company said it will use recent financing to fund development and regulatory approval of that automated instrument and assays. Singulex is headquartered in Alameda, Calif. Singulex develops diagnostic systems that quantify protein biomarkers to diagnose and monitor cardiovascular and other disorders. Its system gauges changes in biomarker levels in the bloodstream and is already being used in clinical trials. The company has partnerships with several pharmaceutical firms that use the system to measure drug effects during trials. Singulex is aiming to commercialize the technology following these clinical evaluations. The company is based in Alameda, California and was founded in 2002. It has raised $50 million in total capital to date, including the recent $19 million fifth-round. Singulex develops the Erenna analysis system and related biochemical assays designed to detect individual protein molecules in biological samples. The company says its platform can count proteins and identify previously undetectable cellular levels of biomarkers such as cardiac troponin I. Singulex currently offers services to research centers at biotech and pharmaceutical companies. It aims to expand into molecular diagnostics, a more challenging and heavily regulated market. The company raised $19 million in its fourth funding round and has raised $31.6 million to date. Those funds are being used to advance its detection technology and commercial relationships with research customers. Singulex develops bio-markers and the Zept x molecular detection system to identify proteins in the body that may indicate disease. The company completed several commercial pilot studies with research labs and pharmaceutical partners using the Zept x. It has opened a 6,000-square-foot commercial operations facility in Hayward and added Mickey Urdea, Ph.D., to its board of directors. Financially, Singulex completed a combined Series C and debt financing totaling $10.5 million. The funding includes an $8.0 million Series C led by a new undisclosed investor with participation from existing investors Fisk Venture and Prolog Ventures, plus $1.0 million from GE Capital and $1.5 million in debt from Bridge Bank. Singulex expects the product to hit the market in the first half of 2007.
