Overview
Skin Analytics develops DERM, an AI medical device that the company says is the world’s first legally authorised system able to independently make clinical decisions on skin cancer following EU MDR Class III CE mark approval. DERM was trained on a very large image dataset including skin cancers, pre‑malignant conditions and benign mimics, and provides triage recommendations to reserve dermatology capacity for patients in greatest need. The company reports DERM can autonomously discharge up to 40% of urgent suspected skin cancer referrals and rules out the most high‑risk skin cancers 99.8% of the time versus 98.9% for dermatologists. NHS Trusts using DERM have reduced unnecessary face‑to‑face dermatology appointments by up to 95%, and the device has been deployed at 26 NHS sites, used in pathways serving more than 150,000 patients and detecting over 14,000 cancers. The firm plans to expand its product scope to cover all dermatology concerns, grow internationally into Europe and Australia, and accelerate entry into the US. It is also recruiting AI and healthcare talent to scale its offerings and operations. Skin Analytics offers a CE-marked medical device and a clinically validated AI system that the company says can identify skin cancers, pre-cancerous and benign lesions at a level comparable to a dermatologist. The system uses a low-cost attachment and a smartphone to enable deployment in GP practices and hospitals, aiming to reduce the diagnostic burden on dermatologists. The company launched an AI-powered clinical pathway with University Hospital Birmingham and continues to forge partnerships within the U.K. National Health Service. Skin Analytics says its service can reduce the number of patients who end up in hospital by 40–60%, depending on where the technology is used. It recently raised £4 million in a Series A and plans to use the funding to expand its focus to the U.S., supported by an FDA Breakthrough Device Designation to fast-track the technology. Founder Neil Daly emphasizes the firm’s reliance on prospective clinical studies and regulatory processes as key differentiators in a crowded AI skin-cancer field.
