Overview
Slash has built an alternative iOS keyboard that functions as a distribution channel for its real ambition: creating the leading mobile search engine. By tapping a dedicated “/” button, users can pull content from services such as Giphy, YouTube, Amazon, Spotify, Apple Music, Google Maps, Foursquare and The New York Times without leaving the conversation. The app intelligently surfaces suggestions (e.g., coffee shops when a user types “coffee”) and also allows custom shortcuts. Launched only a few months ago, the free app has already been installed by more than 100,000 users after trending in Apple’s App Store and on Product Hunt. Founded roughly a year ago and headquartered in New York, the company is currently focused on user growth rather than monetization. Management sees the keyboard as a first step toward a broader mobile search platform and is eyeing additional distribution channels. Slash is participating in Techstars to accelerate development and market reach.
