Overview
Sleepiz is an ETH spinoff that develops Sleepiz One+, a contactless bedside device that continuously captures respiration and heart-rate data during sleep. The startup registered Sleepiz One+ with the U.S. FDA in July and has joined the American Telehealth Association to raise awareness and access U.S. telemedicine networks. The company received EUR 800,000 from the European Active Assisted Leaving program to co-design a remote-monitoring platform for nocturnal vital signs aimed at diagnosing, managing, and predicting chronic respiratory diseases in the elderly. That research project is being developed in collaboration with the Swiss Terz Foundation, In4Care Happy Aging (Belgium), and the medical informatics research group at Aalborg University (Denmark). Sleepiz emphasizes enabling physicians with continuous at-home data rather than random measurements, and aims to expand its technology into foreign markets. Earlier non-dilutive support includes participation in Venture Kick in 2017 and recognition in the TOP 100 Swiss Startups. Sleepiz is an ETH Zurich spinoff that has developed a contactless, medical‑device‑approved monitor that measures breathing rate and screens for sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. The device is placed next to the bed for three nights, transmits data to a cloud platform, and delivers reports and trend analyses for clinical discussion. Sleepiz reports nighttime breathing monitoring with 99 percent accuracy and employs over 50 people. The company completed a second closing of its Series A, bringing total Series A proceeds to CHF 6.2 million, with an additional CHF 1.8 million raised in the latest close. The newly raised capital will be used primarily to roll out its sleep apnea monitor in foreign markets, with a Germany launch planned in the coming weeks and other countries to follow. Main investors in the first closing included Verve Ventures, ZKB, a U.S. health insurance company and the four judges of 'Höhle der Löwen Schweiz'. Sleepiz AG is an ETH spin-off that provides patient-centric disease management via contactless vital-sign monitoring with its Sleepiz One device, which is placed next to a patient’s bed. The Sleepiz One measures human vital signs with medical accuracy and is currently used by early customers in Switzerland and India for sleep apnea screenings. The company has grown to a team of more than 50 people, including PhDs in engineering, data modelling and signal processing, and is headquartered in Zürich with a subsidiary in Pune, India. Sleepiz is developing Sleepiz One Connect, a next-generation device that integrates additional measurements (including SpO2) and an enhanced telehealth platform to deliver more actionable insights. The offering is paired with a telehealth CARE team that monitors patients 24/7 to help identify deterioration earlier. Sleepiz has completed clinical investigations with leading clinics and key opinion leaders in the DACH market and aims to expand into the rest of Europe and the US while pursuing Class IIa medical device classification under EU regulation. Sleepiz develops contactless, radar-based medical devices for sleep diagnostics and has commercialized its first product, the Sleepiz One, which measures heart- and breathing-related movements and body motion with medical-grade accuracy. The company is collaborating with radar sensor maker Acconeer and the University of Gothenburg’s Sleep Medicine Center to build the next generation of three-dimensional, contactless sleep monitors. That collaboration aims to deliver richer monitoring data to enable more personalized therapy and higher standards than current devices. Sleepiz was a winner of the EIT Health Headstart programme and the regional EIT Health Catapult in Germany. Financially, Sleepiz secured funding via the European Union’s HORIZON 2020 EUROSTAR grant, receiving $500k toward a broader $1M research award shared with Acconeer. The joint project is scheduled to begin in May 2021 and run for three years.
