Smart Reactors

1st Floor, Block 15, Galway Technology Park, Parkmore Road, Galway, H91 AY0Y, Ireland

Overview

Smart Reactors is developing nanocellulose, a novel nanomaterial intended for use in artificial lung devices as a bridge to lung transplantation. The company aims to replace the PP and PMP in existing artificial lung devices with nanocellulose-based membranes to provide sufficient blood gas exchange and enable respiratory support for patients with severe end-stage lung disease. The project also targets long-term lung support outside the intensive care setting and envisions an organ with a human–machine interface that patients will carry to improve blood oxygenation prior to lung failure. The EIC Pathfinder-funded program is led by Smart Reactors from the ATU Innovation Hubs in Galway and will leverage a consortium including University of Galway, University of Tübingen, CELLINK (Sweden) and Brunel University London. Smart Reactors said recruitment will soon commence to fill key technical positions focused on scaffold membrane design. The company describes its work as applicable across a range of MedTech applications.
