Founded in 2019, SmartBank operates B/43, a digital finance management service that pairs a Visa prepaid card with a personal finance app and joint-account features. The product targets household finance management gaps in Japan and will soon add parents-and-kids features. SmartBank monetizes via interchange reimbursement fees from Visa and a lending product, Charge Now Pay Later, which lets users borrow up to 50,000 JPY with a commission fee. The company reports B/43’s three-month retention is almost 100% and that monthly transaction volume reached several million USD within a year of its April 2021 launch. Downloads exceeded 100,000 in December and the startup aims for 1 million downloads by the end of 2023. The team comprises 19 people.
