Overview
SmartKem provides truFLEX® technology that deposits organic ink on substrates at temperatures as low as 80°C, enabling use of low-cost flexible plastic substrates with existing industry-standard equipment. Its transistor stacks target applications including bendable smartphone displays, foldable laptops, TV backlights, curved automotive displays, color ePaper displays, wearables, fingerprint and X-ray detectors, and printed biosensors. The company completed a reverse acquisition with Parasol Investments Corporation and now operates under the SmartKem, Inc. name. Following the transaction, SmartKem's historic business will be continued by the combined company. Leadership changed as Ian Jenks became CEO and Robert Bahns became CFO, with Jenks, Bahns, Dr. Simon King, Klaas de Boer, and Barbra Keck serving as directors. SmartKem is based in Manchester, England, UK and recently closed a $24.6M private placement financing. SmartKem develops organic semiconductor materials, notably its tru-FLEX material range, to deliver industry-grade thin-film-transistor (TFT) performance with physical flexibility. The technology targets bendable and foldable mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, as well as wearable display-based applications. Led by CEO Steve Kelly, the company is focused on translating its scientific work into commercial products. SmartKem completed a Series A funding of undisclosed amount to support these efforts. The company plans to use the funds to further develop the scientific foundation of tru-FLEX, accelerate the technology toward full commercialization and scale-up, and support partner programs. SmartKem develops printable organic semiconductor materials and ink formulations aimed at flexible electronics. The company has completed an R&D phase and is now concentrating on formulating organic semiconductor inks for improved performance and for manufacturing printed transistor arrays and logic circuits. Its products target applications including electronic displays, thin-film RFID, smart sensors and printed logic circuits. SmartKem received a financing of undisclosed amount to further develop its flexible printed electronics solutions. The company intends to use the funds to speed up development, scale up market testing and accelerate towards commercialization. CEO Steve Kelly said the funding will enable the company to accelerate developments and growth.
