Overview

Smartspot has built a computer-vision system that pairs a Kinect camera with a flat-panel screen to monitor weight-lifting and other workouts, checking postures and angles in real time. The founders, Moawia Eldeeb and Joshua Augustin, launched the company out of Y Combinator and have deployed Smartspot systems in 10 gyms to date. Their hardware is described as a roughly $2,500 unit that can record workouts for later review. Longer-term the company aims to decouple personal trainers from being physically present by allowing trainers to review recorded videos and provide online feedback, which the founders say could dramatically reduce the cost of personal training. Smartspot has a small team of four people and is hiring three more developers for iOS and Android. Financially, the company recently raised capital to support growth and product development.
