Smilebox offers a photo and video sharing service and creation tools that let users produce greeting cards, slideshows, scrapbooks, collages and similar personalized media. The company operates a freemium model, charging for premium designs, ad removal and other paid features. Smilebox has produced over 30 localised designs and worked with Hallmark UK artists and the Caroline Gardner designer studio for its U.K. launch. The U.K. product includes GBP currency support, a design catalog tailored to British consumers and new designs from leading UK artists. An exit survey of Smilebox Mac/Windows app closers found 85% were women, 68% were parents, 74% were Facebook members and 16% owned an iPhone. The company is pursuing international expansion, having raised a recent follow-on to support that effort. Smilebox offers an online platform that lets users create slideshows, ecards, scrapbooks, photobooks and postcards by loading their own amateur photos and videos into designer templates. The company raised $7M in a Series B financing led by Bessemer Venture Partners and joined by Frazier Technology Ventures. Since launching in June 2006, Smilebox says it has garnered 1.8M users and receives over 1.3M unique users monthly. Recent product improvements include integration of music from media players like iTunes and automatic posting of creations to Facebook. Smilebox has partnered for distribution with companies including Six Apart (creator of Vox) and Corel.
