Overview
Snapwire is a marketplace that connects photographers with buyers via web and iOS, allowing photographers to set their own prices while retaining copyright. The platform matches buyer requests with photographer submissions through Challenges and a nomination-based leveling system that promotes photographers. Initially vetting photographers during private beta, Snapwire recently opened the marketplace to let unapproved or novice photographers sell and enter all active Challenges to lower barriers to entry. Buyers can create custom requests, follow and invite photographers, and nominate favorite submissions; Snapwire takes a 30% transaction fee on payouts. The service emphasizes authentic, non-staged imagery mapped to commercial demand rather than traditional 'stock' imagery. Founder Chad Newell, a stock photography veteran who previously ran Media Bakery and worked at ImageBank, has leveraged industry ties to engage buyers. The company had about 25,000 images uploaded roughly three months after launch and secured a $1.4M seed round.
