Snippit
Suite 1700, 666 Burrard Street, Vancouver, V6C 2X8
Overview
Snippit is a newly launched mobile app that lets users add 4–10 second clips of songs to photos, plus captions, location check-ins, and friend tags. Clips can be taken from songs downloaded on a user’s phone or from 30-second iTunes previews. The company argues the short clip length falls under fair use, allowing it to avoid direct licensing deals with record companies while enabling users to purchase full songs via iTunes (generating affiliate revenue). Snippit’s integration with iTunes previews also means users don’t have to own tracks to use them, and the team is open to integrating other services if APIs are available. The founders see potential for promotional deals with record companies in the future. The app was developed while co-founder and CEO Joe Grano worked as an executive assistant, and he plans to leave that role in about a month to focus full-time on the startup.
