Overview
SnowShoe builds battery-free plastic "stamps" that use conductive and non-conductive materials to emulate fingertip touch patterns on smartphone touchscreens, letting web pages interact with physical objects without a native app. The stamps require no electronics (no battery, NFC, Bluetooth or antenna) and communicate via the phone's touch sensor through the browser. The company offers an API used by roughly 3,000 developers and today launched the SnowShoe Experience Builder to simplify integration. SnowShoe has run trials with partners including Disney D23 and RedBull (the latter produced conversion rates over 80%), and counts small makers up to Fortune 500 customers among its users. Currently the team of seven manufactures stamps on 20 3D printers in Madison, Wisc., producing about 3,000–4,000 stamps per month and plans to transition manufacturing to Asia to scale to hundreds of thousands per month and cut unit costs toward a $0.25 target. The recent funding is intended to increase manufacturing capacity and support growth of the platform and go-to-market team. SnowShoe is a smartphone toy company that develops toys tied to mobile devices. The company participated in the inaugural Disney Accelerator program run by TechStars and was featured at the accelerator's demo day on October 15, 2014. At that demo day SnowShoe announced it had raised $2.2M in a seed funding round. Disney's accelerator offers up to $120K in investment capital to its startups, along with access to Disney entrepreneurs and executives and other resources. The article does not disclose additional operating metrics or financial details. SnowShoe was showcased alongside other consumer- and entertainment-focused startups in the cohort, such as Sphero and ChoreMonster.
