SocialShield

901 Cherry Ave, San Bruno, CA, 94066, United States

Overview

SocialShield provides a cloud-based subscription service that alerts parents to potentially dangerous online activity without giving them direct access to kids’ accounts or copies of communications. The product monitors picture sharing, social gaming and social activity on networks the company cites most used by kids, including Facebook, Myspace and Twitter, and requires opt-in from both parents and children. Rather than exposing content, SocialShield sends alerts for signals such as substance abuse, bullying, suicidal language, contact with strangers or matches to sex-offender registries. The company sells its SaaS directly to families for $5 to $10 per child per month and counts AOL as one of its largest customers; SocialShield’s technology powers AOL’s SafeSocial features. Founded in 2009 by Arad Rostampour and Noah Kindler, the startup plans to use new capital to hire a CEO, continue researching parents’ needs and online behavior, and evolve its algorithms and alert engine as kids move to mobile web and location-based features.
