Overview

Socrata provides cloud-hosted, turnkey open-data and data-driven government solutions that unlock government data for visualization, sharing and reuse. Its product suite is anchored by an industry-leading open data platform and the recently launched Open Data Network (ODN) to connect publishers, businesses, developers and citizens. The company serves more than 200 public-sector customers worldwide, including New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Eindhoven, multiple U.S. states, federal agencies and international organizations. Socrata reported strong operating momentum: it added 36 customers in Q3 2014, saw Q3 revenue grow 92% year-over-year, and was on pace to double annual revenue (2013 vs. 2014). Platform usage rose sharply: data uploaded to the platform increased 116% YoY, page views grew 95%, total data served rose 340%, and tokenized API requests grew more than 400%. The company says it will continue investing in next-generation cloud technology and expand the Open Data Network across industries to bring data-driven government to more jurisdictions. Socrata provides a cloud data consumerization platform that helps users transform raw data from multiple sources into apps, reports, maps, visualizations, dashboards and APIs. Delivered as turnkey cloud services, the platform is aimed at democratizing access to data across government and enterprise. The company highlights customers and use cases in open data and government transparency, including organizations such as the World Bank, Medicare, Data.gov, EnergyStar, New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, Oregon, Montgomery County, and Maryland. Socrata says the platform enables business analysts to perform tasks traditionally done by data scientists. The company announced a partnership with In-Q-Tel to further develop its platform for internal business analysts in data-rich organizations. Financially, Socrata has raised $25 million to date and closed an $18 million Series B in June led by OpenView Venture Partners with participation from Frazier Technology Ventures and Morgenthaler Ventures. Socrata offers an open-data cloud platform that extracts information from siloed structured and unstructured databases, wraps the data, and presents it through modern website interfaces and APIs. The service includes connectors that allow customers to schedule delivery of data from various sources. Socrata recently introduced GovStat to help shift government culture toward more data-driven decision-making and to make it easier for civic developers to build apps. Customers include San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Austin, the United Nations, the U.S. federal government and other municipalities. CEO and founder Kevin Merritt framed the product as enabling government transparency and contrasted it with surveillance efforts like the NSA, saying Socrata helps put government data online so people can see and build from it. The company raised an $18M Series B to extend the platform and previously raised $6.5M in 2008; it was founded in 2007.
