Sofar Sounds

52 Tabernacle Street, London, EC2A 4NJ, United Kingdom

Overview

Sofar Sounds runs curated, ticketed house concerts—often in living rooms—where fans pay $15–$30 to hear artists perform quietly for small audiences. The company has staged more than 20,000 gigs with nearly one million guests and runs roughly 600 shows per month across 430 cities; more than 25,000 artists have played Sofar shows and over 40 of them have gone on to Grammy nominations or wins. Tickets and ancillary sales are the core revenue drivers while Sofar handles venue booking, promotion and event organization with a lean full-time team and unpaid volunteers and hosts. The model has attracted criticism because many artists are paid minimal fees (commonly about $100 per act) while Sofar often retains large portions of ticket revenue; Sofar has also described itself as a tiny startup far from profitability. The company says some international shows are pay-what-you-want and that sponsored events can pay artists up to $1,500, and CEO Jim Lucchese has claimed that, after certain costs, "a little over half the take goes to the artists." Sofar plans to use new funding to expand its footprint, build tools to help local teams organize more shows, and invest more on the artist side to improve ways bands convert attendees into fans and revenue.
