Founded by Johanna Young in 2014 after she moved to Melbourne from Europe, Solbari designs sun-protective clothing, hats and accessories including swimwear, sun hats and more formal jackets and trousers. The brand emphasizes stylish, breathable UV-protective garments and has attracted a customer base of more than 300,000 across over 160 countries. Solbari has grown its headcount from 10 to 25 employees in the last three years. The company says its products are positioned as essential items rather than discretionary spending. Solbari plans to use new capital to expand locally and internationally, grow wholesale relationships with specialist outdoor retailers such as Paddy Pallin, and target markets including the US, Canada, the UK and New Zealand. Management is also pursuing partnerships with corporate Australia and organisations with outdoor workforces while targeting a younger audience.
