Sonu (formerly Sona) launched an open beta of Sonu Stream, a free, ad-free music streaming service coupled with a marketplace where artists auction one-of-one digital assets called SONUs. Artists can set 24-hour auctions with minimum prices and receive instant liquidity; SONU owners receive 70% of streaming payout rewards (pro-rata by streams), artists receive 30% and the company takes a 7% fee. The rewards pool is funded by a percentage of SONU sales and is distributed every two weeks to artists and collectors proportional to streams. Collectors must be U.S. residents aged 18 or older, and SONUs can be resold on Sonu or third-party marketplaces. The platform currently hosts five million tracks and plans to reach 16 million by next year, and Sonu plans to add tipping, merchandise, ticketing, stem downloads and fixed-price audio downloads for DJs. Sonu was founded by Laura Jaramillo and Jennifer Lee (TOKiMONSTA) and emerged from stealth with a model intended to give financial power back to artists and their fans.
