SonaCare Medical is a Charlotte, NC–based developer and manufacturer of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) technologies focused on minimally invasive prostate tissue ablation. Founded in 2004 by chairman Stephen Puckett and led by CEO Mark Carol, the company operates subsidiary Focus Surgery, Inc. Its product portfolio includes the Sonablate®, which has 510(k) clearance in the U.S.; the Sonablate® 500, which holds CE marking and regulatory authorization in more than 50 countries; and the Sonatherm® laparoscopic HIFU system, which has 510(k) clearance, CE marking, and authorization in more than 30 countries. The company received $3M in growth financing from Palo Alto–based Decathlon Capital Partners. The capital will fund sales initiatives following the Medicare C-Code approval that went into effect on July 1.
