Sonata Finance is a microfinance institution that operates exclusively in northern Indian states, with branches in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Uttaranchal. The firm manages a loan portfolio of around Rs 110 crore and reports profitability with 133,767 clients. Sonata says it has diversified its product and service profile to provide value-added services as it learns more about client needs. Promoter Anup Kumar Singh remains active in the business and participated in the recent funding round. Existing institutional backers include Caspian Advisors (via Bellwether and India Financial Inclusion Fund), Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, and economist Swaminathan Aiyar. Unitus Capital acted as exclusive financial advisor and arranger for the transaction.
