SonicCloud builds an app that applies advanced signal-processing to live phone calls and online voice calls to improve intelligibility for people with hearing loss. Users create a personalized hearing profile through an in-app tuning flow (sliding controls for specific sounds) so the algorithms can clarify the spectral ranges where they struggle. The service today operates as a fully functional online calling service and runs its processing in the cloud. The company plans to move more processing onto devices as smartphone chips gain power, aiming to offer a lower-cost alternative to traditional hearing aids. On the financial side, SonicCloud has raised a $4M angel financing and previously closed a seed round at the end of 2015. The core technology was developed beginning in 2012, with a patent filed in 2013 and the assets later transferred into Sonitum in 2015.
