Sophia Search

180 Sansome Street 4th Floor, San Francisco, California, 94104, United States

Overview

Sophia Search develops semantic content analysis tools that automatically extract precise meaning from text without the need for training or human guidance. Its solutions are used by large advertising and publishing houses to understand content meaning and to leverage that insight to deliver information and services. The company is led by CEO David Patterson and was established in 2007. Sophia has offices in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and St. Petersburg, Russia, and is based in San Jose, California. It closed a $3.7M Series A financing to expand operations. The company plans to use the capital to increase marketing and sales in North America and the UK and to accelerate product roll-out at its development facility at the Northern Ireland Science Park. SOPHIA Search provides enterprise search and discovery solutions built on a patented Contextual Discovery Engine (CDE) powered by a linguistic model called semiotics. The CDE identifies intrinsic terms, phrases and relationships to understand meaning and enable organizations to search, extract, de-duplicate and eliminate content redundancy. Those capabilities are positioned to minimize compliance risk and reduce the cost of storing and managing enterprise information. The company serves customers including IBM and Accelrys and operates offices in Boston, MA. SOPHIA was founded in 2007 following an R&D collaboration between the University of Ulster and the State University of St. Petersburg. It recently closed a $1.2M seed round to fund product development, sales channel expansion and global marketing with particular attention to the U.S. market.
