Overview
Soplaya is a Milan-based foodtech startup that provides restaurants with access to quality ingredients via a digitized, automated B2B supply-chain platform. Launched in 2019 and led by CEO Mauro Germani, the company automates ordering, pricing and delivery to reduce waste and improve supplier and customer profitability. Soplaya aims to make the industry more sustainable while expanding its business reach. To date it has performed more than 100,000 deliveries, supplied over 1,000,000 products, and served more than 2,000 restaurants, bars and hotels across 15 Italian cities. Over the past two years the company has grown its team to 55 people and automated every aspect of its B2B food supply chain. It recently closed a €12.5M financing round (equity and debt) to support further expansion, bringing total funding to €16M. Soplaya built a platform to connect small and mid‑size local food producers to commercial buyers, streamlining ordering and payments. Founded in 2018, the team focused on solving logistics by running city fleets and warehouses and contracting vehicles in rural areas across northern Italy (Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto). The company developed a just‑in‑time, distributed‑hub logistics model designed to provide frequent deliveries (five times a week, within 12–24 hours) to replace traditional wholesalers. In response to the COVID‑19 crisis the team quickly added a B2C service, which drove its best month ever in March and helped convince investors to back the business. Management says the unit economics of its city operations are already profitable or near profitability. As Italy reopens, Soplaya plans to refocus on expanding its B2B business while continuing to service existing B2C customers and aims to be in 10 Italian cities by 2022.
