Soraa is an LED research firm spun out of UC Santa Barbara that develops solid-state lighting systems based on gallium nitride technology. Its founders include UCSB Professors Shuji Nakamura, Steve DenBaars, and Jim Speck. The company is Goleta-based and, with this funding, appears to be setting up fabrication facilities or a headquarters in Fremont, California. A regulatory filing indicates Soraa has raised $88.6M and that it is raising $90.26M in this Series B. Sources for the funds have not been announced. The company has previously raised capital from Khosla Ventures, and New Enterprise Associates now holds a seat on Soraa's board.
