Overview

SoundFocus develops a free iOS app that automatically adjusts music to a listener’s unique hearing abilities, including compensating for differences between ears. On first launch the app runs a one-minute test to determine which frequencies a user can or cannot hear and then shifts or drops frequencies in playback so users can perceive them. The app works with the iPhone’s built-in music library and tracks streamed from Spotify. Co-founders Alex Selig — who grew up with hearing loss and wore hearing aids in both ears — and Varun Srinivasan met while working at Microsoft and built the product to “change the way the world hears.” The company offers the app for free and has raised $1.7M to continue development. SoundFocus is also developing a hardware equivalent to bring similar functionality to any music source beyond the iPhone, though details remain undisclosed.
