Space Monkey sells a home hardware device that creates a distributed, peer‑to‑peer backup network by using devices in customers' homes to store and serve data. The product provides 1TB of backup storage for roughly $10 per month and is accessible via web, Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, and Android apps. The system distributes files across users' devices rather than relying on centralized data centers, an approach the founders have described as “anti‑cloud.” That design reduces data‑center operating expenses but increases users' local bandwidth usage. The company is Salt Lake City–based, led by co‑founders Alen Peacock and Clint Gordon‑Carroll, and has about 12 employees. Space Monkey plans to fund manufacturing and early distribution through a Kickstarter campaign rather than immediate additional VC fundraising. Space Monkey combines local storage and a peer-to-peer network by shipping a 1TB hard drive to customers. Files remain accessible locally while encrypted chunks are distributed to other devices for remote access and backup. The company states more than half the network would have to fail before files are lost.
