Spacium
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Overview
Spacium builds in-space refueling systems and a proprietary fuel-storage approach intended to allow spacecraft to dock, refill and extend mission life. The cofounders, Ashi Dissanayake and Reza Fetanat, bonded over space work at the University of Ottawa and initially operated from a small Ottawa apartment before moving to an office and joining Y Combinator. The company says it has developed a unique system that can store fuel for longer periods, which it views as a competitive advantage. Spacium plans a demo mission of its capabilities later this year and reports a “strong pipeline of customers.” Financially, the startup recently closed an oversubscribed $6.3 million seed round led by Initialized Capital. Competitors cited in the coverage include Orbit Fab and Astroscale, the latter of which recently won a U.S. Space Force contract related to refueling work.
