SpareRoom is a roommate-matching app and website launched in the UK in 2004 and described as the UK’s biggest roommate site and the third-biggest real estate site. It offers listings through its website and iOS/Android apps, moderates every ad with automated systems and human reviewers, and runs Speed Roommating events. The company is rolling out video profiles to provide a digital equivalent of face-to-face meetings and says user numbers have more than doubled this year. SpareRoom already launched in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles and reports over 191,000 users in the US. The service is being made available across the country with a focus on key cities including Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Las Vegas, Miami, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, Seattle and Washington DC. SpareRoom is funding its US push from its own profits and is investing $6 million to accelerate the expansion.
