Sparrow is a simple Mac mail client that overlays social context onto email, showing recipients' social profiles and enabling actions like adding them as Facebook friends. The Sparrow 1.2 release adds Facebook Connect to show recipients' Facebook profile pictures and lets users add recipients as friends. Other product features include a unified inbox, Gravatar support, and localization in multiple languages including simplified Chinese, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Dutch, German, Japanese, French and English. In its first four months the Mac client was downloaded over 300,000 times. The company has raised $250,000 in funding from Kima Ventures, Dave Morin and Loren Brichter. CEO Dom Leca says the team is working on pulling in LinkedIn and Twitter data to broaden social context beyond Facebook.
