Overview
Sparta Biodiscovery is a London-based spinout of Imperial College London that develops the Sparta single particle automated Raman trapping analysis platform for detailed physicochemical analysis of nanoparticles. The platform is designed to improve manufacturing and quality control of nanoformulations such as lipid or polymer capsules used to deliver cancer drugs and gene-therapy materials. Sparta was co-founded in 2022 by Professor Molly Stevens and CEO Dr. Jelle Penders, building on prototypes from the Stevens Group at Imperial. The company has secured up to £3.5 million in funding tied to a commercial rollout, and says the support will cover instruments, consumables and bespoke software. Sparta plans to place instruments across academic, government and commercial labs, targeting users working on gene therapy, lipid-nanoparticle cancer therapeutics and nonviral vectors. First adopters will provide feedback to support a full commercial launch in 2024.
