Spawning AI was co-founded by Jordan Meyer and Mathew Dryhurst and created the HaveIBeenTrained website to let creators opt out of specific model training sets (initially Stable Diffusion v3). The site enabled domain opt-outs and by March had removed 80 million pieces of artwork from the Stable Diffusion training set, rising to over 1 billion by late April. In April Spawning launched an API and an open-source Python package to expand opt-outs beyond LAION-5B to other datasets and media types (text, audio, video). The company is partnering with Hugging Face to add an info box showing the proportion of opted-out data in text-to-image datasets and to link model trainers to Spawning’s API. Planned features include exact-duplicate and near-duplicate detection, a Chrome extension to pre-emptively opt out content, and a caption search on HaveIBeenTrained. Spawning says it will monetize by building services on top of its content infrastructure as it grows and establishes IP standards for the AI era.
