Speckle builds an open-source platform to exchange, collaborate on and harvest large proprietary 3D design files used in architecture, engineering and construction. The founders, Dimitrie Stefanescu and Matteo Cominetti, are trained architects and engineers who began looking at the problem in 2015. The product is a developer platform that enables real-time 3D collaboration and lets developers extract 3D data to build applications. The company aims to improve interoperability and break open barriers created by proprietary formats from vendors like Autodesk and Trimble. Speckle had a working product by the time it raised a $1M pre-seed in 2020 and today employs 13 people while building a community around its open-source project. The recent $5.5M seed will support continued product development and community growth.
