Spectrapply is a startup linked to the Servicio Regional de Investigación y Desarrollo Agroalimentario de Asturias (SERIDA) that develops devices based on Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS). Its systems detect blood biomarkers that can help predict heart attacks and determine sex and viability of in vitro embryos before insemination. The same NIRS technology is used to assess food composition, shelf life, origin, quality, and unwanted components without damaging samples. For the agro-food industry, Spectrapply's devices can enable producers to extend quality control to 100% of production, reduce the number of lab samples, and provide minute-by-minute status on products such as meat and fish. The company states the technology can reduce food losses by up to 50% due to expiry and up to 80% due to misidentification. Spectrapply received a €150,000 investment from Fitalent, the venture capital fund of Everis.
