Overview
Spectroplast commercializes a proprietary silicone 3D‑printing technique that enables production of custom, flexible silicone parts for applications ranging from medical prosthetics and reconstructive devices to robotics and industry. The company was founded by ETH Zurich researchers Manuel Schaffner and Petar Stefanov and recently spun out of ETH Zurich after work funded by an ETH Pioneer Fellowship and a Swiss national innovation grant. Spectroplast says it already serves roughly 200 customers, but current production is limited by printing speed and the need for founders to oversee shifts. The team has produced and initially tested anatomically tailored heart valves but expects clinical deployment to take many years of testing; near‑term focus is on “life‑improving” (non‑life‑saving) applications such as custom breast prostheses, hearing aids and prosthetic liners. The founders plan to use new capital to hire staff to operate printers, and over the next couple of years the company may move from doing all printing in‑house to selling printers or retrofit modifications to existing setups.
