Splitsecnd offers a hardware plug-in that provides automatic crash detection, a built-in speaker/microphone, battery backup, GPS tracking and online vehicle location for older cars. Users plug the device into the 12V outlet; it uses an accelerometer to detect crashes, calls the company call center, and keeps a log of the last 10 trips. The device was tested in safety trials including at the University of Michigan crash labs and ships with a USB port so the car’s socket remains usable. Cell service is provided via RACO Wireless using AT&T’s and T-Mobile’s networks on 2G, and the company offers Android and iOS apps for family-tracking features. Splitsecnd sells the device for $199 plus a $14.95 monthly service fee and is available on the company website, shipping within two weeks, with plans to sell in brick-and-mortar stores later in the year.
