Spool provides browser extensions, a mobile bookmarklet and a unique email address that scan pages and cache text, images, PDFs and video (including Flash) to users’ devices for offline access. The product adds a push-to-friend feature that drops content directly into a friend’s Spool library rather than broadcasting on social networks. The company runs a mobile app beta on iPhone, iPad, Kindle Fire and Android devices and is already #14 on the free Android Marketplace charts. Management says retention is strong and envisions a recurring-payment monetization model after users build cached libraries. Spool will use the new capital to scale its complex back-end caching technology and build a self-scaling system on cloud servers to handle increasing load. CEO and co‑founder Avichal Garg says the company has turned down acquisition offers and is focused on growing the user base.
