Spotter provides upfront capital to creators in exchange for long-term licenses to some of their content, recouping investments by earning the ad revenue from that licensed content. The company works with large YouTubers such as MrBeast and The Try Guys and says it does not take creators' copyright or intellectual property. Spotter has invested $940 million into more than 735 YouTube channels, according to its website. Creators who partner with Spotter have reportedly grown viewership and often return for additional deals rather than it being a one-off. Spotter recently launched Spotter Studio, an AI-powered suite of tools for creators. The company declined to disclose what the newest funding will be used for. Spotter offers creators large upfront payouts in exchange for the future ad revenue generated by their YouTube back catalogs, typically via five-year licensing agreements. The company analyzes engagement metrics (watch time, retention, likes, shares, comments) and advises creators on growth to increase the value of licensed catalogs. Since launching in 2019, Spotter has completed about 200 deals with creators including MrBeast, Like Nastya, Dude Perfect, Aphmau and Smokin' & Grillin' wit AB. Spotter says its roster's licensed content generates over 40 billion monthly watch-time minutes and that it was on track to reach a cumulative $1 billion invested in creators by mid-2023. Average deal size is around $1.5 million (with some deals as low as $15,000), and the company says its payouts are not loans; it targets recouping investments in roughly four years. Financially, Spotter raised a $200 million Series D that values the startup at $1.7 billion and previously raised $555 million across three undisclosed rounds.
