Springworks is a Lisbone, Maine-based aquaponic farm that produces organically-certified lettuce for local restaurant and retail customers. The company operates a 6,000 sq ft greenhouse and grows crops using a symbiotic system with tilapia housed in adjacent tanks. Waste from the fish provides an organic source of fertilizer for the plants, and the plants, in turn, filter water returned to the fish. Springworks also manufactures the Springworks “Microfarm”, a ten-gallon aquarium-adapted system for homes and schools that produces fresh herbs year-round. The company secured $1.6M in funding and plans to use the capital to finance creation and operation of a second 8,000 sq ft greenhouse scheduled to be fully operational by summer 2018. Backers were not disclosed.
