Overview
Stack Overflow operates a public Q&A platform visited by more than 120 million people each month and a SaaS knowledge-management product, Stack Overflow for Teams. The company markets Teams as a collaboration platform for developers and technologists to break down silos, accelerate onboarding, and improve customer experience. Stack Overflow for Teams’ revenue has doubled every year since launching in 2017, and the product serves over 200,000 paid users across more than 5,000 teams. Thousands of companies use its products, including Bloomberg, Elastic, Expensify, Microsoft, Wix and Zapier. Stack Overflow also offers Advertising and Talent products and says it will continue investing in its public platform and community. Founded in 2008, the company is headquartered in New York. Stack Overflow is a vertical Q&A site network that announced a $12 million Series B round. The company said it will change its name to Stack Exchange Inc to reflect its cross-vertical aspirations. The Series B was led by Index Ventures, Spark Capital, and the company's first investor Union Square Ventures. The round brings the company's total funding to $18 million. Index Ventures’ Neil Rimer, Spark’s Bijan Sabet (as a non-voting member) and Anil Dash will be joining the board. Co-founder Joel Spolsky noted the company first raised venture capital in 2010. Stack Overflow operates a community-driven Q&A site for programming where users post questions, others request clarification or comment, answers can be voted up or down, and askers can mark an accepted answer. The company reports 7.1 million unique visitors per month. It describes itself as a combination of a wiki, blog, forum, and social news site and emphasizes community editing and voting mechanics. Stack Overflow has developed a product called Stack Exchange to let others create Stack Overflow–style sites for non-programming topics. Charging for Stack Exchange had not worked, so the company raised outside capital to experiment with expanding the model beyond programming. The funding is intended to provide runway to hire people, take on new projects, and launch a democratic system for proposing and creating new expert Q&A sites.
