Overview
StackBlitz provides full development environments in the browser using WebAssembly and its WebContainer technology. The service supports JavaScript-adjacent frameworks including Next.js, Nuxt, Node.js, React and Angular and currently uses a pared-down version of Visual Studio Code as its editor. The team spent three years building WebContainers to boot dev environments within milliseconds and plans to run a full extensible version of Microsoft's open-source code editor in the browser to remove current editor limitations. The company reports about 2 million developers using the platform each month, says enterprise revenue grew 10x in 2021, and that headcount has quadrupled to 20 people. StackBlitz says much compute is offloaded to the edge—keeping its AWS bill to "a couple of hundred bucks"—and argues browser sandboxing enhances security, which has driven enterprise interest. Monetization follows a GitHub-style freemium model: free public projects and GitHub sync, with paid tiers starting at $9/month that enable private projects.
