Overview

Stairwell provides a platform that delivers continuous intelligence, detection, and response to help security teams outsmart attackers. Led by CEO Mike Wiacek and based in Mountain View, CA, the platform is used by a number of Fortune 500 companies. The company emphasizes continuous intelligence and detection capabilities tied to response workflows for enterprise security teams. Stairwell raised new capital to support growth and product development. Management says the funds will be used to scale the product and expand the team. Stairwell builds Inception, a threat-hunting platform that takes an “inside out” approach by continuously evaluating a company’s internal data for suspicious activity. The platform treats internal data as inherently suspicious and re-evaluates it against new indicators and threat intelligence to bootstrap future detections. Stairwell says this approach enables customers to detect anomalies in days versus the industry average of 280 days. Inception is launching in early release for a limited number of customers, with general availability scheduled for 2022. The company will use the new funding to further develop Inception and to grow its headcount; Stairwell currently has 21 employees. Mike Wiacek, the founder and CEO, previously served as chief security officer at Chronicle, Google’s moonshot cybersecurity company. Stairwell emerged from stealth in 2020 and is based in Palo Alto. Stairwell is a cybersecurity startup led by Mike Wiacek, the ex-chief security officer of Chronicle and founder of Google’s Threat Analysis Group. The company came out of stealth after almost a year and says it is building at least one product to provide security teams with accessible, user‑centric tools that reveal relationships between external and internal data sources. Wiacek declined to disclose product details or timing for release. At launch Stairwell has 10 employees, largely focused on engineering, and plans to add designers, physicists, and applied mathematicians. Jan Kang, former chief legal officer at Chronicle, has joined the startup. The company secured seed funding to fund hiring and product development.
