Overview

Sterecycle is a London, UK-based waste treatment and renewable power company that uses patented autoclave technology to steam-process black-bag household and industrial waste. Led by CEO Tom Shields, the company currently operates capacity of 100,000 tonnes per annum and plans to increase capacity to 175,000 tpa by the third quarter of 2012. It raised £5.1m in equity funding to support that capacity expansion. The company said it is planning a public listing next year to raise additional funds to grow the business and develop more sites across the UK. The funds will be used to scale operations and develop further sites as it pursues growth across the UK. Sterecycle is a UK waste recycling technology company that uses an environmentally‑friendly autoclave process to treat municipal and commercial waste. Founded in 2003, the company has raised £34m in equity to date, including the latest £10m round. The new capital will fund a multi‑year programme to expand recycling plants, including doubling capacity at its Yorkshire (Rotherham) plant from 100,000 to 200,000 tonnes per annum by late 2010. The Yorkshire site's 200,000 tpa throughput is equivalent to the waste produced by 400,000 people, and headcount there will rise from 37 to 57. Proceeds will also support development of a second site in Cardiff, which received planning permission and is expected to go live in 2011 with 60 new jobs. As part of a long‑term growth strategy, Sterecycle plans to build additional plants across the UK and has appointed Tom Shields, who has over 30 years' experience in the chemicals sector, as CEO to lead the expansion.
