Sterifre Medical develops Aura, a system that uses hydrogen peroxide to rapidly disinfect healthcare devices while avoiding damage caused by improper cleaning. The company says Aura replaces manual wipe-based sterilization, aims to reduce hospital-acquired infections (the CDC estimates 3% of patients are affected), and prevents premature device breakage. Sterifre plans to use the new funding to commercialize Aura and make cleaning medical tools easier at the point of use. The Kirkland, Wash.-based, three-year-old company has seven employees and plans to hire 15 to 20 more over the next eight months. Sterifre raised an $8 million round that brings its total funding to $20 million after a prior $12 million round in 2017, and the company declined to reveal participating investors. CEO Richard Shea previously led Olympus Respiratory America and was a founding executive of Stericycle.
